100th Day of School

Do you celebrate the 100th day of school in your music classroom? Are you looking for some 100 days activities and songs? Are you possibly wondering what I’m talking about?

Well, if you teach at an elementary school, it’s very probable that you celebrate the 100th day of school. Especially in kindergarten classrooms, the 100th day of school is very  important as students are learning to count. Teachers plan various activities and projects – i.e dress like a 100-year old or create a poster outlining 100 using 100 Cheerios, goldfish snack, balloons etc.

Without a doubt, I’m sure many of you know all about this special day and the excitement that comes with it. In this post, I have several engaging and exciting activities to celebrate the 100th day of school! Essentially, I’m sharing with you my lesson plans for the 100th day of school!

100th Day Songs

First, if you have access to the Music K-8 magazine subscription, they have some wonderful songs in there. I love adding some movement and dance to get kids up and excited.

For this song,  “One-Zero-Zero,” I have students create the numbers 1, 0, and 0 by standing in that formation – straight line of 4-6 students, oval of 7-10 students, and another oval of 7-10 students. Then students wiggle when they hear their number.

Next, I love using the song “100 Days of Learning.” This one counts by 10 up to 100. First, students stand in a circle and hop 10 times during the beginning counting part. Then, all circle to the right for 16 beats (“one hundred days”); circle to left for 16 beats (“what can you do…”). Now, walk 4 steps towards the center of circle and then clap 3 times (on “history”, “1,2,3,” “A,B,C,” “and P.E.”). Walk 4 steps backwards to create a full circle, and clap three times. This walking and clapping section repeats, and the dance begins again.

100 Movement Activities

Next, if you’re looking for some more active songs for the 100th day of school, then take a peek at the two below for a 100 days brain break.

Instrument Activities

Also, I teach my 2nd and 3rd grade students a song called “A Hundred Days,” with original words set to the tune of “Hill and Gully Rider.” The melody is very simple, and students learn it quickly. Then, we work on adding some instruments to create a little Orff arrangement.

Additionally, if you would like to get your students playing instruments, here is a great rhythmic review and instrument opportunity. Also, I love using this for 100 days celebration because of the lyrics with each of the rhythmic phrases. When all of the instruments have practiced and know their part, everyone plays together. Or, you could even use it to accompany another 100th day song. Check out this rhythmic instrument arrangement here!

I hope that you are able to use some of these 100th day songs with your students. If you get a chance, I’d love to hear how they went! You can find me on Instagram (@bethsmusicclassroom) or email me at beth@bethsmusicclassroom.com.
